From Designer to Entrepreneur: Anthony’s Background
Graduating with a Bachelor of Design in Digital Media from Swinburne University, Anthony’s initial foray into the professional world was with the Entertainment Book, a well-known member benefits company in Australia. For a few years, he dedicated himself to building websites for high-end clients, honing his skills and laying the groundwork for his future endeavors.
However, life had different plans when the company underwent a restructuring process. Anthony saw the writing on the wall and decided to look elsewhere for opportunities. The pivotal moment came when he secured a role as a marketing coordinator at Chadston, one of Melbourne’s biggest shopping centers. But once again, fate intervened in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 Catalyst
In an unexpected twist, Anthony’s journey truly began when he lost his marketing coordinator position due to pandemic-induced layoffs. Struggling with the abrupt changes, he surprisingly found solace and motivation through newly formed connections with entrepreneurs and business owners. One such individual, a life coach, proved instrumental in encouraging Anthony to take the entrepreneurial plunge.
“Why don’t you start your own business?” she asked—a question that would soon change Anthony’s trajectory.
Building a Business During a Crisis
Interestingly, Anthony had never seriously entertained the notion of starting his own business before. He absorbed business podcasts and inspirational content, hoping one day to be his own boss, but felt unprepared to make the leap. The pandemic, however, acted as the catalyst he needed.
Reflecting on his skills and the minimal costs required to launch a web development business, Anthony decided to take the plunge. His expertise from building websites at the Entertainment Book and helping friends in his spare time provided the confidence he needed. Moreover, the shift towards digital platforms during the pandemic meant that businesses urgently needed online presences—a golden opportunity for a budding web developer like Anthony.
